TRANSMISSION BREAK IN PROCEDURE

TRANSMISSION BREAK IN PROCEDURE

EXCESSIVE HEAT WILL DESTROY YOUR TRANSMISSION
DO NOT DYNO YOUR VEHICLE UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION BREAK-IN IS COMPLETE!
ONLY USE PDS APPROVED TRANSMISSION FLUID

After installing your freshly rebuilt transmission, breaking in the new clutches is a critical part of the entire process. Prior to putting the car on the dyno or running the car at full power where the transmission will be under max load, you must complete the simple steps listed below. Failure to do so can result in premature failure of the clutches.

Most importantly, you need to make sure that you fill the transmission with enough fluid and perform the bleed procedure correctly. Not having enough fluid in the transmission will cause issues and in most cases not allow the transmission to shift properly. Make sure you drained and cleaned any items that contain contaminated Transmission Fluid: Cooler, Converter, T-case.

  • Perform transmission re-adaptation process / re-learn procedure (if possible).

  • Required 500 break-in miles of easy stop and go driving.

  • While driving you should be periodically running through the gears, up-shifting and down-shifting.

  • Do NOT just cruise on the highway for 100 miles, this will not properly break in the clutches.

STEP 1:
  • MAKE SURE TO START WITH A KNOWN GOOD TRANSMISSION CALIBRATION!

  • Verify correct fluid level and type.

  • Verify that no DTC's are present, e.g. Transmission, Engine, ABS, etc...

  • Reset Transmission adaptations.

  • Perform "Quick Learn" (8HPxx transmissions only).

STEP 2:
  • Road test vehicle and verify transmission operation.

  • Recheck transmission fluid level.

  • Recheck that no DTC's are present.

STEP 3:
  • Drive Vehicle for a MINIMUM of 500 miles at mild to moderate load.

  • Make sure to go through all gears, Up and Down / extended operation in one gear is NOT recommended.

STEP 4:
  • Recheck transmission fluid level.

  • Recheck that no DTC's are present.

  • BREAK-IN COMPLETE!
